We’re halfway through the year, and I think we can all agree that our 2020 goals might need a little…readjusting. 😬
Back in 2019, I created a list of my top 20 goals for 2020. I, like the rest of us, had no idea what was to come in the year ahead. When things around me began to change, and change in a big way, I started to realize that those goals probably won’t hold up much longer.
1. 30 minute workout every day
2. Have wreaths year-round
3. Stop eating meat
4. Read 50 books
5. Go on regular coffee dates with Vincenzo
6. Start donating profit to an organization
7. More Instagram chats
8. Host quarterly dinner parties
9. Anniversary in Vegas
10. Host a family holiday
11. Learn Italian
12. Use Poshmark more
13. Pay for work travel less
14. Start a podcast with Vincenzo
15. Stop saying the ‘F’ word
16. Take more selfies
17. Sustain a healthy work culture/environment
18. Throw Lucy a birthday party
19. My little secret! 🤐

Many of my 2020 goals included social gatherings and travel. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, these are obvs not happening anytime soon. I began with those goals when it came time to update the list, and I also explored other goals I’d made that just didn’t feel like me right now (yes, I will continue on to eat meat and say the ‘F’ word when I want to!)
The biggest part of reassessing where I’ll direct my time and energy this year was being honest with myself about what matters to me, both right now and moving forward. With that in mind, I could read through my list and ditch the goals that didn’t align with my ‘why’. Then I replaced those goals with new aspirations that reflect my current values and interests.
Pro tip: Reassessing your goals is not a sign of weakness! It doesn’t mean you’re throwing in the towel or taking the easy way out. Instead, you’re coming back to your ‘why’ and effectively prioritizing the work that promotes your mission so you can go after the life you want!

9 times out of 10, you’re reassessing your goals because something didn’t pan out the way you thought it would. So what went wrong?
Get clear and honest with yourself about whatever challenge you’ve faced to bring you to this point. Was it an issue of time management? Not asking for help? Not prioritizing a project or task? None of these challenges are reasons to feel guilty or discouraged — instead, they are pointing you towards your path to success. Find the reason something went wrong so you can fix it, adjust as needed, and move forward to your goals!
Now that you know the problem, consider if the end goal even still matters to you. If you haven’t been prioritizing, haven’t reached out for necessary help, or can’t seem to manage your time around it, how important is that goal to you really?
A huge step in reassessing your goals is gaining clarity on your ‘why’. If a goal doesn’t align with that ‘why,’ it likely won’t get accomplished. Cross it out and move onto better things.
With your ‘why’ in mind, consider how you will move forward to achieve the new things that matter to you. Write down your new and improved goal, and begin the process of creating an action plan. Goals without accompanying plans will remain on the page — instead, bring them to life and start chasing them!
QOTD: What goal(s) are you reassessing in 2020?
