5 Tips for Defining Your Success

Success is not one size fits all. And while that can be exciting, it can also make it difficult to narrow down exactly what your success looks like.

If someone asked you what it meant to be successful, what would you tell them? Would you think about success in terms of money? A job title? A feeling? Getting clear about these things can help guide you to your own unique brand of success so you can begin crafting goals to get you there.

To define what success looks like for you, ask yourself these 5 questions:

5 Questions to Ask When Defining YOUR Success

1. Where will you be?

When you think of what success looks like in your life, where will you be? Where do you live? Where do you work? Building the foundational setting of the life you want is crucial, especially if the work you want to do is reliant upon a location.

This can also apply to your work life — are you working in the office or from home? This lifestyle decision can impact many factors of your time management and your social goals. Decide where you want to do what you do and work towards getting yourself there.

2. What will you be doing?

What will you be doing in the life you want? Maybe success is defined by a certain career path for you — if so, get clear with yourself about what you want that work to be. Are you working for yourself? Someone else? On a team? Freelancing?

Don’t let money be a deciding factor in this step towards the life you want. If money were no object, what would you choose to be doing with your time every single day? Follow that inclination to discover how you can truly become successful. No matter how much money you make, it will never be worth it if you don’t enjoy the work you’re doing.

3. Who will you be surrounded by?

The relationships you build in your life are a huge factor in how successful you will be. Life Jim Rohn said: you are the average of the 5 people you hang out with. Who will those people be? What will they offer you, and how will you be valuable to them? Where can they get you?

Make a goal to surround yourself with people that make you feel like the best version of yourself. Notice how you feel when you’re around others — do you start to doubt yourself? Or do you feel confident and seen in your social group? When you’re chasing success, make sure the relationships you build will be a vehicle to help you get there, not a roadblock that stands in the way.

4. What will you have achieved?

Do you have long-term goals set for yourself? Maybe your success comes from achieving certain things — if that’s you, get super clear about what those things are. Do you want to have a book published? Gained a promotion in your career? Started a family?

Take a look at the goals you have in your life and start making a plan to get you there. One of the biggest benefits of setting big goals on your way to success is they give you a destination — all you have to do then is find the way to get there. Once you know where you’re going, your path will be so much easier to follow.

5. Is your ‘why’ being fulfilled?

What is your ‘why’? Know it and own it on your journey to success. Ultimately, the life you want is going to be a reflection of your ‘why’. If you know why you do what you do, that fulfillment will find it’s way to you.

Find clarity on your ‘why’ and never stop chasing it. Remember — success isn’t the finish line. It’s not something you reach once. Instead, it’s a mindset, a sense of satisfaction with the life you’ve crafted for yourself, and a realization that you’re doing the work you’re meant to do. It’s a long road, but someday you’ll be able to look back and reflect on these 5 questions, knowing that you put in the work to get yourself to the life you want.
