Know who you’re speaking to! If you make something for everyone, it might be nice, but no one is going to want it when it doesn’t feel special.
How can you be a part of someone’s story? The only way to know is to get super clear and super specific about who you’re talking to through your brand. When you’re creating a brand, you are the product. Your audience needs to know exactly what that product is, and how it benefits them. What will they tell people about you?
Do not dwell on this! Don’t overcomplicate your name. People need to use it, say it, articulate it, but if adjustments need to be made, it’s not the end of the world.
Choose something that aligns with your mission, and lean into it. These days, you don’t want to choose a name that’s being used up everywhere else. Check for their availability and leverage it where you can!
If you can’t see the vision for the change you want to make in the world, you will never understand the big picture. Whether you have a team or it’s just you, there is a bigger purpose for the work you’re doing.
The vision is how you do something, and the mission is why. Who are you helping, and what are you doing for them?
When you’re clear on your mission, you know exactly when to say ‘yes’ and when to say ‘no’ to work. Instead of hunting for a paycheck, you start being honest with yourself about the work you want to do and how it aligns with your values.
As you talk about your company, people are going to want to know more. They’re going to ask how you got started. The more you can point to that game-changing moment where you started working towards this company, the more people will get excited about your product.
A company is not all about the founder. If you have a team, credit them! Showcase their work, make them feel like they’re a part of the story — because they are. If you don’t have a time, thank the people supporting you. Maybe it’s your significant other, your siblings, your friends — acknowledge the people who have helped you in your journey.
Colors, fonts, logos — it all matters. Curate a vibe that looks and feels like you and your community. Consider how it aligns with your mission, your messaging, and how it impacts your audience.
Pro tip: Don’t settle when it comes to design. There are so many opportunities for you to build the brand of your dreams — you should never be afraid to tell your team ‘let’s do better.’
I see so many businesses share their features — only their features — when they’re getting started. Of course, we want to know how things work. But what are the benefits? How do you make a positive change in someone’s life? The features matter, but they don’t get to the heart of why someone will choose you over the competition.
