What To Do When Your Views Are Down

There’s been a lot of talk lately about what to do when your views are down. And, trust me, I’ve been there. As someone who goes deep into the analytics, I can completely relate to feeling like views are down or that YouTube has it out for me.


In any situation, you need to be prepared for what the algorithm and the atmosphere of social is going to do for you. It’s not reliable, no matter how many subscribers you have. You are putting content out on rented space that you can’t control or predict.

There could be countless reasons why your video isn’t getting the views. Those reasons don’t really matter. What does matter is the next step: the work you’re going to do to get clicks on your video.

What you can do when views are down:

Pay attention to real-time analytics

I can usually project what’s happening with my videos in the first couple of hours. Your subscribers will watch your video which gives you trending activity. That activity will push the video a little further for the subscribers that haven’t had the chance to watch the video yet.


Use Your Email List

This is one platform you have complete control over. When my video isn’t doing as well as I want it to, I go to Aweber, my email marketing platform. I send out a quick email to my email subscribers letting them know that I’ve posted a video and a link to watch immediately.

Reach Out To Your Friends

You should have a small group of friends (i.e. a Facebook group, an accountability group, or something similar) that you can call on to watch, comment, and subscribe.

This kind of attention (read: ENGAGEMENT) gets your video trending in the right direction so that new people have the opportunity to find the video and get value from it.

This is a great strategy if you’re just starting out and don’t have a huge subscriber number or active email list.

Engage in the comments

You should be the first comment on your video.  You should follow-up with every single comment left for you. Commenters get special treatment because they showed up and took the time to make a statement. Literally.

Start a conversation. Show respect and love for the people who came to your channel.

Use your next video to get views on your previous video.

If your next video is doing well and getting more views, send your watchers to your last video. You could (literally) ask people to go watch that other video or you could create a YouTube card or use other YouTube features.

It’s ok to be transparent that the last video didn’t get enough attention. It’s just backlinking. Simple.


It happens. Big YouTubers are doing it. Smaller YouTubers are doing it.

Don’t be one of them.

If you aren’t getting views, that’s on you. There are things that you can learn and marketing strategies you can implement so that the next video is better. Take the time to learn and to get better.

Bought viewers don’t stay. Bought viewers don’t engage. Bought viewers aren’t coming back.

YouTube isn’t going to help you because you paid for viewers. Robots are going to keep you from learning and growing.

Just because you build it doesn’t mean they will come. You have to do the work to get views, subscribers, and real engagement. But, it’s all worth it.

Do the work; create video; get attention; go after the life you want.
