Why Posting Social-to-Social is a Bad Idea

I talk to people every single day to see if my company would be a good fit for them to bring in to improve their marketing strategy and sales funnel. I spoke with someone today that brought up a great point and misconception about social media posting.

I see a lot of people sending updates to their followings all the time:

Hey Twitter! Follow me on Facebook!

Hey Facebook! Check out my gallery on Tumblr!

And stuff like that. You don’t have to use so many words as those but linking from one social network to another is a little bit silly. I mean, think about it.

Did you join social media to get more likes on all your other social media? No! You joined to get more business, right?

There may be some instances where social-to-social makes sense, but you better come up with that reason and stick with it when it is the case because the overall rule here is that it’s not a good idea.

Do you think Facebook prioritizes any posting from another social network (other than the ones it owns like Instagram?) No. So when you auto post from Twitter or post a link to Pinterest, it’s just not going to make it on the newsfeed.

You need to treat all social networks as they are: different.

Only then will you realize that when you treat an environment the way it should be, as its own version of a cocktail party, you’re much more likely to get something out of it. You gotta give first, but it’s very possible to receive.

Stop worrying about making the process all about moving Facebook likes to Pinterest follows or whatever your current formula is. You’re actually making it really confusing for your potential customer to find out more about buying from you.

Have a website. Send them there. Have an email list. Connect with them there. These are all entities that YOU OWN AND CONTROL. Unless the Internet explodes, you’re good. Why wouldn’t you want to control the experience that your followers have once they’ve decided you’re worth following more regularly?

What’s your social media funnel? Where is your #1 place to send people once they’ve started following you on social media?
